The most important part of training is training, right?
So why do people ask about the spiritual element of Karate and where does that fit into the puzzle?
Here is one way to look at it:
Most of us don’t know who we truly are. Usually because we are too focused on the world outside to look inside.
The hard grind of training shines a light on our weaknesses and strips away our self inflated ego. It shows us our shortcomings. We should thank our training partners and instructors for that.
Its this deflation of self that is the first step to the ’spiritual path’. So look in the mirror, be honest about what you see and have the courage to work on improving it. That is the spirit of Karate.

Hi All,
Just some quick photos from the grading in Japan.
Hi Everyone,
As many of you know Sensei Charles is over in Japan this week with a contingent of Senior Instructors grading for his 4th Dan.
Yesterday after a gruelling grading which involved kata, bunkai and kumite he was award his 4th Dan by Kawata Sensei, a significant achievement and of course the first 4th Dan ever in our dojo.
According to Sensei Paul, his perfromance was outstanding and he has got the grade with flying colours.
Sensei Charlies is aiming to be back in town by Thursday at the latest so we’ll get a full account of all the thrills and spills then. There’s also a chance we may be able to get our hands on the video footage of the grading, which we’ll put on the website, when available.
Lets make sure we all congratulate him for reaching this significant milestone upon his return
We often forget that the main reason we keep training is because it is actually a lot of fun. Here are some Karate one liners that I am sure we’ve all heard at one time or another, there’s a nugget of truth in each, but they’re good for a giggle!
1. “Pain is just weakness leaving the body!”
2. “C’mon you guys, my grandmother is faster than that!”
3. “Did you ever hear of the slowest gunfighter in the west?”
4. “The only privilege of being a black belt is wearing it!”
